Console players of Baldur's Gate 3 are now limited to only 100 mods in a save, and probably won't be able to access big naturals Withers as we do on PC.
Larian released its modding tools for Baldur's Gate 3 recently--and it's a damn impressive integration that the developer, technically-speaking, wasn't under any obligation to make. Granted, it paid off. Head of publishing Michael Douse credited mods for the game’s physics-defying numbers throughout 2024.
This integration included mods for consoles and Mac, which is a rare treat to our underserved digital brothers across the pond. Aoife, the senior communications developer, explains in the video below that there are many limitations.
Wilson says that authors who want their mods to be available on consoles must submit them to Larian Community Team, who will then test them personally. But there are many potential barriers. There are the obvious things, such as "Mods that crash a game", which would be great in a horror mod where Swen could trap you in a Only Monika scene.
There are also some serious technical limitations. Mods that "add/modify/remove" shaders are prohibited, which means a slew of graphical overhauls mods will be taken off the market. Mods that "increase the level of nudity and violence in the game" will also be prohibited. This means console players won't be able to enjoy the beauty of big Naturals Withers.
The same goes for big sexy PC mods. Larian prohibits "any element which can be considered as discriminatory, racist obscene libellous or offensive". But the studio cannot stop us from putting these mods in our game the old-fashioned way. I'd love to see them (for legal purposes, it is a joke). I think I would lose a fight against Swen Vincke.
The studio can't stop you from destroying your own save file with 200 mods. This will turn our games into a Lovecraftian nightmare of heaving breasts, mewing Astarions and Thomas the Tank Engine. It is our God-given right, to self-destruct. Console players are limited to just 100 mods installed before the game asks you to stop.
"With over 100 mods available on console, it's actually reaching the limit of how many mods we can have active while keeping Baldur's Gate 3 steady." This means that console users will no longer be able to access cross-saves containing over 100 mods. A blog post by Larian promises "a follow-up solution is planned" to allow you to restore these saved files.
Larian has done nothing wrong. The fact that it is able to provide this level of support is impressive. Due to the closed-circuit nature of consoles any mods Larian port over then become the responsibility of the studio. Withers' knockers won't be on your PlayStation, because the studio would have to explain this to rating organisations. I wouldn't want to have that conversation with anyone. It also has to ensure that it doesn't enable tech that will break anything important. Mystra, thank you, has not hindered our ability to rock and roll along the Forgotten Coast wearing mankinis.
