Larian is not holding back on its next two RPGs. 'The machine was designed to make large games.'

Larian has two RPGs in the works now that Baldur's gate 3 is complete. Larian is known for making massive games, so they're sure to be huge.

Developing two RPGs simultaneously sounds like a massive task. I've wondered if Larian intended to reduce the scale of their games when compared to Baldur's Gate 3, which is a behemoth. Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian, told me in an interview that it wasn't.

He says that the machine is designed to make large-scale games. "We were designed to make large, ambitious RPGs as well as to try out new things." Larian has grown considerably over the past few years. More resources are certainly helpful, even if more developers don't necessarily translate to faster turnarounds or the ability for more games to be made. The developer has nearly 500 employees and, after the success of BG3, it is not in a financial bind.

Vincke and Larian also know what they want. "We know what we want for our gameplay systems. We know how to evolve them and how to do new stuff... they're all huge."

Larian is not the only one who does not know what shape these RPGs may take. Vincke, the game's creator, pitched the vision of the game at a recent meeting in Barcelona.

Larian isn't giving anything away but we shouldn't rule out the possibility that he will dabble in a new setting. It's a fantasy studio that's been around for a long time, but the studio is not tied to a particular setting. Vincke replies, "Yes, I'm sure," when asked if he would be interested in switching from fantasy to another genre, such as sci-fi. "There are so many things I would like do." "There are only a few things you can do."

You can read the complete interview on Larian’s past, current and future. We discuss everything from the studio’s reinvention following its biggest failure, to the possibility of it working with a pre-existing universe again.
