It plays well, runs smoothly, and heralds the kind of game play which will keep score-hounds coming back to it again and again.

It's online, it's smooth to control, it's cheap, and it's worth a blast.

When it works, it gathers up your problems and piles them together to await their death. When it goes wrong, it simply washes everything bad your way, trapping and killing you.

This is exactly the kind of simple but hugely playable offering that the PlayStation Store was made for.

Blast Factor has some exciting moments and offers a unique twist on a familiar formula, but it still ends up feeling generic and forgettable.

But the bigger problem seems to be that developer Bluepoint Games has gone after two audiences at once, and it hasn't really done enough for either.

The high tempo action is matched by a fluid frame rate that does not seem to dip even during boss encounters. While it lacks the draw dropping visuals of many full price counterparts, for £3.49 (until 23 May) it is a fine start to the PlayStation Store and a refreshing pit stop to keep on your hard drive.

While all this mindless blasting is fun for a while, personally it became quite tedious in a very short time.

There are countless games of its genre that do it better, some of which are more than 20 years old, and its use of tilt functionality doesn't change that.
