Call of Duty 4 is the most popular Steam game right now. But you only need it to play a Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer mode that launches this week.

It's not Black Ops 6 but a Call of Duty that's currently climbing the Steam top sellers list. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is the 2016 re-release of Call of Duty 4, a 2007 game. It's currently ranked number three in the US on the best-selling game list (based on revenue), and is in the top 10 worldwide. This is beating out games like Dota 2, The First Descendent and Baldur's Gate 3

It seems a little strange at first glance. The remaster being sold for $20 explains a small part of the sales increase, but not the reason why this CoD remaster, which isn't particularly popular in the series or on Steam, outsells all other games.

The real reason behind the renewed interest in PC gaming is that it's more fun. A long-awaited mod is coming out this week, which revives the classic Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer on PC. You need this remaster, however, to get it running.

The project called H2M will be released on August 16. The mod's website states that H2M is a mod designed to recreate the classic Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer experience while adding "a variety of maps, new progressions, unique camos and weapons, custom attachments and more."

H2M won't be publicly available for several more days, but a few YouTubers and streams have already gotten a sneak peek and are sharing their very positive impressions. "I've been waiting for years for this," said CoD Youtuber FaZe scope upon seeing H2M main menu.

If you're wondering what the fuss is about a 15-year old CoD mod, it's because this mod fills a huge gap left by Activision in 2020 when they officially remaster Modern Warfare 2. MWR's sequel is strangely campaign only, despite recreating CoD4 multiplayer in MWR. Modern Warfare 2 was still considered the peak of CoD by many teens in the late aughts, so fans were displeased. H2M is bringing back the nostalgia of 2009 and giving people something Activision will not.

And more. H2M features remastered versions for every classic MW2 level, but also reworked campaign maps. I have to see what it's like. The package also includes every CoD4 Map, totaling 54 maps.

While I'm not a fan of the modern live service trappings of Call of Duty, I'm interested in what's essentially a brand new Call of Duty multiplayer suite. There's no battle pass, store tab or paid XP boosts. Just the old-fashioned challenges, camo unlocks and prestige levels.

H2M is free when it comes out on 16th. However, the developers say that you must have a legitimate copy of Modern Warfare Remastered in order to access the game. MikeRxqe, a streamer from the UK, has also shared an easy workaround for a common problem that MWR has with modern graphics cards. Before you jump into H2M make sure to launch CoD4 and turn off shader cache.
