This is a must have for both fans and newcomers a like, but don't expect the second coming. This is a solid and improved version of East India Company, nothing more.

Nitro Games relied on the well received concept of the predecessor while going to work on all the points of criticism the actual game had to take. This resulted in a game, that is not only looking and feeling good but also has something to offer to both beginners and pros.

The game is a little short and void of replay value. The structure may not appeal to hardcore sim enthusiasts.

If you've played the unofficial prequel East India Company, you will also like Commander: Conquest of the Americas. All three core aspects of the game (economy, diplomacy, war) fit perfectly together, motivate you, and convince you to continue to play. Strategy game enthusiasts also should consider buying Commander: Conquest of the Americas.

Nitro Games has improved the engine used in East India Company. Commander strives to be both a trading and naval combat game. It almost pulls it off but is sunk in sight of shore.

In the end Commander is a combination of good ideas that just don't seem to click, it may be the result of an overly grand scope but the Commander is sadly not greater than the sum of its parts.

The lack of an idiots' guide tutorial is not a great selling point, but plough through this confusing opening (on free campaign) and you will gradually learn and lose a surprising amount of time to what is a relatively unique and intellectually-solid title.

Strong naval combat is marred by shallow trade and town management.

GameSpot May 20, 2024
Instead of wrestling with rival nations, you'll tussle with unruly advisors in this naval trading sim.

PC PowerPlay May 20, 2024
Richly detailed graphics don't make up for the shallow, simplistic trading and combat.

Peculiar challenges and a good managerial dimension have to compare with a poorly detailed graphics and an excessive selling price.

The Age of Discovery has enough excitement and intrigue to fill a hundred video games, just not this timid and repetitive strategy game.

Despite being quite enjoyable at its best, this maritime strategy game is scuttled by a very slow start and a lack of depth.

The world needs to push back; the missions need to get more serious more quickly and there needs to be greater stakes than whether you make 150,000 bucks this year or 200,000. I think Nitro has that game in them. Alas, this is not it.
