Commandos 2: Men Of Courage Critic Reviews

A complex action game featuring solid graphical elements and intense game play.

It’s a challenging game, but if you like your games to tax that sponge between your ears and have enough dedication to put in the effort required to get the most out of it – this will give you weeks of entertainment.

What Commandos 2 does, and does exceptionally well, is push itself far enough away from dry tactical planning and into the world of quick-fire gameplay and addictive puzzling.

The controls are a lot harder on the Dual Shock 2 than they were with the keyboard and mouse, but you will get use to it once you break a few controllers and have a see your psychiatrist a few times.

Since the PS2 version loses the crispness of the original's graphics and some of the game's other fine touches in translation, it can't be recommended over the PC version.

It simply seems like an animal taken out of its native habitat and dropped in the middle of some alien world. If you have a PC, I can think of no reason to recommend the PS2 version.

There is no denying the overt level of difficulty that Commandos 2 boasts but thankfully, it isn’t completely unforgiving; you’ll have the option to save your game anywhere in a mission so that you don’t have to restart each time you bite the dust.

Nowhere near the level of quality the PC version offers in every major category, console-specific gamers who never experienced Men of Courage's older brother could be none the wiser.

A difficult to master user interface combined with gameplay that was already too difficult on the PC make for strange bedfellows.

The controls are awkward and seemingly endless in nature, but the scenarios are so well devised that you'll feel compelled to beat them.

If you have enough patience to explore the maps, can deal with the awkward controls, and don't mind reloading games frequently when you can't spot hidden dangers, then Eidos' latest release is one of the best strategic games around for PS2.

The interface is clumsy, and the long load times can offset the fun factor. Even so, hardcore strategy fans should have fun with this.

Extremely difficult. Only hardcore fans need apply.

The graphics and sound are the details that got left out of this one.

Worth playing only if you have time and are a diehard fan of the military strategy genre.

For those with the patience and will to eventually master the control interface that buries it, Commandos 2 is still an excellent game.

Simply a subpar port of a pretty good PC strategy game. The difficult controls coupled with the difficult gameplay lead to a game that's just too difficult for most console gamers, and not in a good way.

Not a poorly constructed game at all, but more of an esoteric offering for the console gamer with exceptional patience and desire for a game that demands meticulous strategy.

I can't help feeling like this game was designed by sadists, for masochists. It's that frustrating.
