Remedy claims that Control 2 is a 'action RPG', but it does not explain what exactly this means.

Control 2 is a mystery. We only know that it will happen and that Remedy will self-publish the game, rather than partnering with an external publisher as they did for the original. Remedy revealed an interesting fact as part of its Capital Markets Day presentation today, revealing that this new game will be a "action RPG."

The presentation included a few slides, such as this one.

Remedy confirmed the issue in a Bluesky post:

What does that mean, at least for me? Genre definitions are often ambiguous: I tend to think of Control as a third person shooter, but Remedy describes the game on Steam as a “third-person adventure” and repeated this categorization today.

I would speculate that Remedy will lean heavily on player freedom in Control 2 - more control over Jesse’s abilities, actions and interactions with NPCs with different outcomes depending on player choice.

Remedy's commitment to the RPG side of the equation could be a major shift. Control's "anything is possible as long as it is weird" setting would be ideal for a roleplay-focused game. However, historically, Remedy has focused more on telling a story than letting the players roam around the world however they please.

Remedy recently released its first ever multiplayer game, FBC Firebreak. So, who knows? It could be that it's really eager to spread those wings.

We will not know for a while. Control 2 has no release date yet, and Remedy stated in today's presentation the game is still in "production ready," which I assume means it's not in full production.

I've contacted Remedy to get a little more information about Control 2's new genre and will update this post if I hear back.
