Crisis on the Planet of the Apes is fast and fun, delivering a brief jaunt into the oppressive world of the beloved sci-fi universe. While the experience is light in the narrative department, the gameplay innovation and high production values more than make up for story’s shortcomings. With the release of this game, FoxNext VR Studios have broken free of the movie-tie-in stereotype, and have established themselves as a VR developer to watch.

An interesting adaptation of the Planet of the Apes franchise to VR, based in great motion controls in climbing and shooting. On the other side, adventure side is too simple, it is less than two hours long, and you won´t find many reasons to replay it.

If you love the Apes movies, this is a lovely little VR tie-in, and if you're looking for your next VR kick, I'd definitely give this a go.

At just over two hours Crisis is short.

Crisis accomplished its goal of immersing me in the role, even if some of the more brilliant ape interactions were one-off moments rather than regularly used mechanics. Sadly, this brilliant immersion is hampered by dull environments, enemy encounters that become boring, and a fairly weak story that requires the films in order to mean much.

Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR is not a game that will leave a lasting impression with its brief play time and some unnatural feeling controls but the climbing works well and the gunplay brings back memories of light gun games.

The concept actually isn’t too bad and is supported by mainly immersive controls. Nonetheless the execution is mostly superficial while the pacing is underwhelming.

If the feeling of being an ape is well-delivered in Crisis on the Planet of the Apes, the game suffers from many technical issues like tracking problems and motion sickness - inducing framerate. The level design is simplistic and the few intense moments won't be enough to turn the game into a good memory.

It's a game without a purpose. VR can be a great medium if you have the right idea, but this is not the case. If you are a big fan of the franchise, you might enjoy it, but if not, there are better options out there.

From poor FPS sequences to dull climbing sections or ridiculous moving phases, the developers of Crisis of the Planet of the Apes show a lack of inspiration and never seem to feel comfortable with their own game.

Crisis on the planet of the Apes VR is a poor game. Despite some good ideas like the cover system or the monkey movements, the controls are not accurate, the gameplay is just average, and the story is far from the best ever told.

I’d talk about the game’s graphics and expand on the discussion of using VR to expand on the Planet of the Apes mythos but right now? I just don’t care anymore. I'm so frustrated thinking about all the problems that made this game so miserable to play that I’m done. Don’t play this game or, if you have to, wait for a sale. Damn you, Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR. Damn you all to hell.

The apes look pleasantly simian, and it’s nice observing conversations from behind the small visible portion of your hairy forearms, but these are small beacons of light in an otherwise unremittingly bleak landscape.

Clumsy, superficial, and in many ways fundamentally broken, Crisis On the Planet of the Apes is an often infuriating VR game that plays like a bad arcade rail shooter from the early ‘90s. Far from reaching the artistic heights of the rebooted film series in whose world it takes place, it takes a silly, action-heavy approach to the material that doesn’t respect your intelligence.
