It's tough not to be cynical when confronted by such an uninspired freemium town building sim such as this. It hardly uses the movie license well.

First off, The Croods is extremely slow to get going. Secondly, though Rovio has added a little bit of thought here, it's not sufficient to elevate The Croods above the overcrowded freemium building masses.

In The Croods, there's very little to do except draw yourself inevitably towards the murky world of in-app purchases, and given the current climate and presumed audience for the game, that may not turn out to be the wisest move for Disney or Rovio.

Ultimately, The Croods is a slow, mediocre game that doesn’t require you to do much beyond tap the screen on occasion. Only the littlest fans of the movie will get anything out of it—and you might want to turn off in-app purchases before you let them get too far.

The Croods isn’t the kind of game you’d expect from a Rovio and DreamWorks partnership, and it fails to leverage the strengths of either while beckoning for your wallet.

Whether the game is just poorly thought out or a cynical cash-grab to prey on children and their parents' wallets is debatable, but either way The Croods demands far too much time for too little reward to be worth a download.
