Netflix's Devil May Cry is a bit confused about its voice actors, as Johnny Yong Bosch has been confirmed to be voicing Dante.

Netflix's Geeked Week featured a number of new trailers. These included a sneak peak at Arcane Season 2, a teaser for a Cyberpunk anime and my favourite, a new Devil May Cry animated series.

The adaptation is not difficult to impress, but as I watched the trailer, I wondered why I recognized Dante's voice. It wasn't Reuben Langdon, who voiced him in games, but it still sounded like it.

To my surprise, I found out that Johnny Yong Bosch would be voicing Dante for the Netflix anime. Netflix Geeked tweets: "Can confirm." "That's Johnny Yong Bosch voicing Dante!"

I'm never disappointed by Bosch's excellent voice acting. I've always been a fan of Bosch since I first heard his voice Ichigo in Bleach. This choice is strange, as Bosch voices another character from the same universe: Nero. Nero is a playable character from Devil May Cry 4 & Devil May Cry 5. He's also Dante’s nephew.

One fan says, "Bad decision, in my opinion. It would have been different if Bosch didn't sound exactly like Nero, as Dante. But yeah, that's straight-up Nero voice coming out of Dante and it's very strange." If Netflix releases subsequent seasons (which is what I hope), they're in a tricky situation. Either Bosch voices both characters or a secret third voice actor voices Nero.

Fans have remarked on Bosch's impressive range: "He is not like other voice actors who can be easily recognised." He has a wide range and is very talented at acting. "If he changed his tone and the way he emphasizes things, people wouldn't be able to identify him as Nero."

I won't argue that Bosch is a great actor, but when I heard his voice, I recognized it within seconds, and this was before I had even had my morning cup of coffee. So I'm not convinced.

Reuben Langdon's voice would have been a great choice for Dante, but it does not seem like that was an option. Some theorize that Langdon was not chosen for the anime's young and flashy rendition of Dante because of his grizzled tone. However, I think it could be due to his social media presence.

Langdon's controversial social media presence in recent months culminated in an spaces meet, which not only disappointed his fans but also made it clear why he hadn't reprised the role of Dante in Devil May Cry mobile games Peak of Combat and Ken in Street Fighter 6 or the Devil May Cry mobile video game Peak of Combat. Here's what one of his shocked viewers had to say:

"The whole thing was so bizarre. I didn't record everything or even the majority of it, such as the stuff about Trump and the media, Gaza and more. It was 2.5 hours where an articulate, kind-sounding gentleman talked about crazy and wild things while being verbally egged by random Twitter men."

As summarized by the viewer, these "wild and crazy" things included repeating Covid-19 conspiracy theory, agreeing to Putin's unfounded claims that Nazis control Ukraine, and defending J.K. Rowling after her numerous transphobic comments.

Capcom has not officially fired Langdon, nor given any reason for his absence from recent games. But it seems that we should be able to accept a new voice as Dante. Who knows, they may recast Nero or Bosch might be able pull off a stellar performance that sounds completely new. I'm not worried about either.
