Expeditions: Rome is astounding in every area I was presented with. Constantly I felt like there were tons of things for me to explore and pay attention to, and truly simulates how I picture leading an entire war campaign.

Expeditions: Rome is a profoundly in-depth RPG that manages to achieve its lofty ambitions with verve. There are a few potholes in this otherwise smooth Roman road with how steep the learning curve is, but they should get smoothed out in time. For those who loved the tactical machinations of X-Com, but wanted a bit more character development and a personal story, Expeditions: Rome is more fun than visiting the Circus Maximus and Colosseum with a full amphora of wine.

Streamlined is a good word to describe Expeditions: Rome. Instead of jamming it full of every feature under the sun, it’s lean and mean. Maybe you are making fewer choices than you would in the latest Pathfinder game, but every one of those choices is meaningful. That philosophy permeates every level of the game, from the combat systems, to the art design, to the music, and the writing. A lot of thought went into every part of this game. RPG fans should honor that by giving just as much thought back to this game.

Expeditions: Rome knows how to make history exciting and engaging. The tactical engagements offer variety and challenge. Controlling a legion is makes the player feel powerful. Interacting with the likes of Mithridates through dialogue will appeal to history lovers but you don’t have to know the period to enjoy the narrative. I spend 40 hours with the game and plan on going back to try other ideas and other tactical setups. I would have liked to see a little more innovation in the tactical combat and, maybe, more mechanics for the legion side of the game. Expeditions: Rome needs a few hours to get going but once that’s done it has a lot of fun and cool historical moments for its fans.

Expeditions: Rome balances thoughtful historical story-telling, ambitious RPG elements and tactical warfare to serve up a Roman triumph.

Historical fiction is a quick way to my heart, and while, if I were inclined to make a historical fiction game set in ancient Rome myself, I would probably go with some kind of retelling of Caligula’s story (note: I swear it’s so much more interesting than the popular stories would have you believe), I found this to be interesting and engaging experience on every level. The tactical action is challenging and deep, the management side of things is robust, and the story that it weaves will keep you invested, even 40 or more hours into it. This is an early game of the year contender.

Expeditions: Rome is sure a masterclass in writing and player choice. It is a true RPG, with a great historical period, political intrigues and vast combat situations to navigate. Even though it possesses some lacklustre moments like its legion sieges and skirmishes, it is a completely polished, fun, well written and content-rich experience.

I'll make this as simple as possible: If you like the idea of controlling a Roman Legion and conquering in the name of Rome, you will like Expeditions: Rome. If that doesn't sound like fun, then this game won't be for you.

Don't be fooled by its raw presentation, and don't let yourself be discouraged by a poorly made dubbing: Expeditions Rome is a video game that treats us with a first-rate role-playing experience. In a nutshell, if you love tactical RPGs you can't miss Logic Artists’ latest creation.

Expeditions: Rome is a surprisingly detailed tactical RPG that takes you through three huge theatres of the Roman republic on a personal quest for revenge or triumph. This story is what you make of it, packed full of meaningful decisions that influence many aspects of the game. Adding to this story is a robust character development system that feeds into the excellent combat, with multiple side-missions to develop both characters equipment and stories, as well as your war camp. The game feels like it could become dull, but never reached that point and is one well worth it for any RPG fan.

It’s hard to put a genre tag on Expeditions: Rome. It has small-unit skirmishes, clashes between armies, some strategy planning on the campaign map, camp management, crafting, role-playing, and so on and so forth. But the best part is that you don’t need to be Caesar to keep track of it all, because they are perfectly interwoven.

Thanks to a solid turn-based combat system and an extremely convincing set of characters and an enthralling story, Expeditions: Rome manages to be a great RPG but a not so great strategy game.

Despite the rather overstuffed Legion Management aspect and the lingering feeling of watching a "Netflix adaptation" of ancient Rome, the game's objective-based combat, high production values, as well as the plethora of available RP options, make Rome the most complete Expeditions game yet.

We really liked Expeditions: Rome and we recommend it to all those who are looking for a deep and multifaceted role-playing game, albeit with some critical issues, especially from the strategic side.

Expeditions: Rome is the best title in the series yet, with an intriguing storyline that can be partially influenced by players choices and a deeply satisfying combat system in which players can test their tactical prowess.

Expeditions: Rome is an ambitious turn-based strategy game that unites adventure, role-playing, strategy and tactical combat in a single title. It stands out for a pampered recreation of the culture of the time and despite its markedly strategic vocation, it has a consistent story that will hook the user and motivate him to progress in the game. The tactical combat, thanks to its movement system and the infinite possibilities of personalization of the units, are the best that has been seen. He just flounders on the strategic map where, waiting for the legion to have something to do, the protagonist wanders aimlessly looking for a random event to happen.

Expeditions: Rome is a very niche third episode in the series. A tactical RPG that is both interesting and efficiently crafted not to bore the player with its lore but to engage him in its beautiful ancient Rome world.

A few small annoyances aside, Expeditions: Rome is an impressive, huge, and exciting CRPG. Massively ambitious in its combination of genres, and competent enough to make the variety work massively in its favour.
