Looks good, plays good, a nice use of souls-like mechanics to penalize players for dying but still lets you run freely and enjoy the game at your own pace; there is a lot to like about Foregone. It lands itself squarely near the top of the 2D action platformer pyramid. A little more depth in the skill tree and a little more oomph in the special abilities could take it to that next level, but it stands on solid footing and offers a class leading experience.

Foregone is a good 2D action platformer, and worth a play-through. I’ve played many games that are easy to put down when the review is done, but Foregone is staying in my rotation for a while.

Foregone, although initially weakened by a certain lack of personality, finally manages to impose its own rhythm, distinguishing itself as a fun and carefully developed action. The empowerment of the protagonist and her equipment keep the attention, while the difficulty, high but never prohibitive, puts the player on the one who lives, without ever throwing him into frustration. The derivative design soon gives way to an excellent technical department, capable of providing scenarios between the pleasant and the wonderful. Foregone, on the whole, is a pleasant and fascinating experience, which never manages to explode completely, but holds for its entire duration.

Foregone offers some fast-paced, and at times, downright frantic gameplay moments providing a sense of accomplishment as you reach level transports or take out massive bosses. The adventure hits a few different high moments but does suffer from some repetitive design choices and enemy variety. Still, I’m left impressed with how Foregone took some chances on a heavily saturated genre and even managed to stand out through its beautiful level design and unique systems.

Foregone offers a consistent and enjoyable experience but doesn’t do anything you can’t find elsewhere.

Foregone is a good game from start to finish. The combat provides an exciting challenge, the art style is on point, and there are just enough mechanics mixed in from various genres to keep things interesting throughout. However, following the source material of the inspirations a little too closely means Foregone can feel like a lot of good ideas that don’t come together in a fully-thought-out package.

If you're a fan of challenging games like Dead Cells, this definitely worth your attention despite some minor flaws and a general lack of depth.

Foregone is a graphically gorgeous, if not derivative, romp that struggles to create many memorable moments or differentiate itself from contemporary action-platformers.

Foregone is a good Metroidvania that gets inspiration from several different sources. While that's good, its lack of innovation makes it a game full of promises that aren't really fulfilled. It's a good game that is always on the verge of being great but never really achieving it. It's worth the play though, for those who like the genre and like hard spikes of difficulty.

Forgone is definitely a good game, with every inch of the combat feeling just as good as it looks. I just feel like this game could have done a lot more with what it had. There is a tight, Souls-like loop, great locomotion, and satisfying combat. But the forgettable narrative and somewhat generic aesthetic made me not too interested in what was going on outside of the core gameplay loop. That's definitely okay, but stops this game from being much more than a competent Souls-like experience.

What’s left is a game that works so well on paper - boasting great graphics, plentiful gear, and yes, even gunchuks - that’s fundamentally monotonous in practice. It’s certainly not a disaster, but for the premium cost of $30 on the Nintendo eShop, gamers deserve better.

If there is one easy way to describe Foregone, it is disappointing. It is on the edge of actually being a very great game, but all of its parts are just completely average. Combat is too slow, gear is too boring, skill upgrades are nearly non-existent and there is just too little that is 'cool' about the game to keep a player going. The game needs far more of its purported story, combat needs to be far more fluid, and the RPG mechanics need heavy expansions before this game can be recommended.
