Frostpunk 2's designers have announced that the game will support mods through a modding program called FrostKit. Mods were a frequently requested feature for the original Frostpunk. 11 bit studios used their proprietary engine to develop it. Unreal Engine allowed them to release an in-game mod development tool along with Frostpunk.
"With the FrostKit, you will be able create custom maps, fill them with custom models, then set their new cities against custom scenarios, whether they are ancient, cosmic, different in thousands of ways from the frosty-apocalypse original setting, or in any other way," said 11 bit in the announcement.
A beta version will be released alongside the launch of Frostpunk 2 in this month.
"The beta version will allow creators to access the majority of its functionality, but these will be iteratively improved while taking into account your feedback. This will give us a better understanding of what works and what could be improved. Before the official release, the tool will first be tested in a closed beta by selected members of the modder community.
In a YouTube video, 11 bit technical director Szymon Jarblonski said, "Imagine creating custom maps, models or even scenarios."
Frostpunk 2 will be released on Steam on September 20. This is a delayed release after 11 bit decided that the game would have features "you deserve to see on day one and not in a patch after the release."
