Helldivers 2 players are tasked with building a 'Democracy Space Station', a 'gigastructure of indeterminate firepower' that will be targeted by literal democracy
Space stations are cool as hell. And now, Helldivers 2 is bringing a new frontier to the audacious storytelling of community-driven stories. In the new major order, players will be tasked with the first of four parts to build the Democracy Space Station. Once the Democracy Space Station is built, the community can vote on the location and deployment of the Democratic Death Star.
The coolest thing about the DSS is that it's actually visible in the game orbiting Gaellivare. It is likely that it will grow and change as players complete major orders in its construction. This is a new exciting feature in Helldivers 2’s unique collaborative storytelling. It's one to receive those fun lore updates about what Major Orders accomplish, but quite another to see the striking, quantifiable changes in the game.
The first Major Order is to liberate and hold the world of Turing at the end of a five-day countdown--potentially a tall order, but the sheer cool factor on display might be enough to win over the required manpower from the playerbase. According to the official Helldivers 2 app on X "The Everything App," the in-universe reason is "to enable the Ministry of Science establish a state-of the-art Xenoentomology Center." The Center will prototype new High-Efficiency Drives capable of transporting gigastructures such as the DSS. I think it's a good idea, but "entomology", as you know, is the study of insect life, not interstellar space propulsion. What do I know?
As always, I'm reminded about my 700-hour pandemic dalliance in Destiny 2. The group effort stuff just didn't have Helldivers 2 cool factor - you had to run the same activities repeatedly to fill a global counter. You need something to make the deal more appealing, like a sickly as hell skybox satellite that is slowly being built.
I'm curious to see the final battlestation deployed. The major order explains that the battlestation will use powerful Helldiver-directed weapons to help liberate its orbited world. Helldivers can decide where to deploy DSS and when to use it's capabilities through a cutting edge voting system. This sounds like an exciting new tool to tackle future Major Orders. However, it is also something that dedicated players could muck around with, in order to sway the vote or trollingly. To be honest, I think that sounds like a lot of fun.
