With its sledgehammer humor and clever blend of stealth and action, Helldivers is a lot smarter than a passing glance might have you believe. It’s a game in which life is cheap but the deaths aren’t, where carelessness gets you turned into kibble, and sustained battle will leave you with an empty gun and a horde of pissed off monsters.

While it may not look like much on the surface, Helldivers has a hell of a lot going on once players dig in, and being a disposable interstellar trooper raiding death planets has never been more perfectly captured than it is here.

Helldivers may not look that spectacular, but it certainly plays that way. A hardcore shoot 'em up that rewards tactical thinking and teamwork.

Unrelenting and brutal, Helldivers delivers fast-paced combat, epic standoffs and a comical approach to death. Its enemies are varied, powerful and a constant threat to the players. While the full impact of the larger multiplayer experience remains to be seen, it still adds a nice little scratch to the progress itch.

While the maps and enemies could be more varied and interesting, there’s no denying that the gameplay is stellar, rewarding you for working closely with your teammates and punishing you otherwise.

Right in the sweet spot between being fun and challenging.

Helldivers isn’t game that has come out of nowhere, but it is one that has fully exceeded expectations.

At a first glance Helldivers might look simplistic and repetitive, but it does not take long before you realize how deep and enjoyable the core mechanics are. If you want an easy to understand yet challenging cooperative shooter, you cannot do better than Helldivers.

It isn’t the prettiest game you can play on PS4, PS3 or Vita, but Helldivers is one of the most exhilarating, and you’ll get all three versions for the price of one.

Helldivers has everything we expected in an Arrowhead game: it's fun, it's challenging and highly rewarding. It is best played with friends as you can annoy them for the sake of fun. The social component of the global war effort is well implemented and motivates players to engage in it. Highly recommended.

A badass little blaster that's not afraid to be hardcore and treat you like a whiny little child, Helldivers is most fun when you and your teammates work together.

Things can go from excellent to utter crap in mere seconds, and entire missions can be lost easily, but that’s part of the fun.

Even after the unlocks dry up, the challenge and camaraderie that Helldivers offers makes it hard not to attempt "just one more mission" with your friends, a proposition made all the more enticing by the inclusion of four-player couch co-op. I still don't know how the community-driven galactic campaign will shake out over the coming weeks, but contributing to the larger war effort is just one more welcome excuse to enlist.

Helldivers is an excellent mix of tactics and action. The freedom it offers through weapons and Stratagem-skills makes it possible for everybody to create their own way of playing this game. The difficulty level is nice and high, which makes the co-op experience even more intense. This game might look a bit generic, the gameplay is so much fun that you won't even notice.

If you are looking for a game that you can pick up and play a few rounds on your lunch break, or spend a few hours playing with friends while laughing, strategizing, and blasting your way to victory, I’d say quelling the menacing alien forces is well worth the enlistment price.

If you can find good company that will help you throughout the online campaign, here you'll experience one of the best co-op games ever created.

You can play Helldivers alone but there’s not much point to it, because it’s the co-op that’s teeming with dramatic moments that make this twin-stick shooter easy to fall in love with. Not for a lifetime maybe, but for a dozen evenings of heroism, sacrifice and brotherhood in arms.

Its strategy, action and excitement on cooperative mode with friendly fire helps us to forget that Helldivers' procedural design results in repetitive matches. If you are looking for a game with difficult challenges and a great time with friends then this is the game you're looking for.

The amount of depth, coupled with the potentially super high rewards for good players, makes this a diamond in the rough. For those of the correct disposition, Helldivers will be an absolute gem.
