Worth Playing June 12, 2023
Impaler is a fun game if you know what you're getting into. It's a simple enough arena shooter that plays fast and is short enough to ensure that you can squeeze in multiple runs in a short play session. The need to kill airborne enemies with a stomp can put a damper on things, but the rest of the gameplay is solid. Impaler is priced at $2.99, so it's worth a look for shooting fans who want a quick fix.

Impaler provides solid shooting gameplay but with very little lastability. There is only one level, a small list of enemies and weapons, and only takes a few hours to collect everything. What it does do well, though, is refinement. It's boiled FPS elements down to a very satisfying core and discarded anything unnecessary. For me to consider it a full game, it needs more levels, more collectibles, more enemies, and more weapons. But for only three dollars, it's kind of hard to complain about it.

Impaler is a good time for shooter fans looking for an instant nostalgia fix. The gameplay, music, and visuals achieve the ideal 90s aesthetic with a gothic twist. While it is limited in content, short, and a little too easy for the genre, the cheap price tag is appropriate if you want to give the game a stab.

Without many peculiarities, elegant gestures or specifically innovative ideas; Impaler is a compelling demonstration of the limitations under which some of the most iconic shooters in history ever created. Those that have evolved into what are today digital sports and wonders of multimedia design, programming and animation.
