Everyone has a favourite Bioware game, and mine is the original Mass Effect trilogy. They're still probably the best sci fi RPGs, and unlike most of their competition, they are also action-packed romps with high-octane battles.

Bioware returned to the games in 2021, spending years remastering them for the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. This included texture, lighting, and 4K resolution upgrades as well as bug fixes, control improvements, and gameplay enhancements. It greatly improved the original game which was not as mechanically polished.

The improvements made to the original game are the main reason why the Legendary Edition is better than the original trilogy. Mass Effect was a great game, but it was a stepping-stone between Bioware's old RPG sensibilities and its swashbuckling style that would be perfected in Mass Effect 2. The Legendary Edition version of the first Mass Effect game isn't an overhaul, but it smooths out some of the annoying kinks. (I'm looking at the inventory management.) It even makes the Mako a more enjoyable vehicle to drive.

The first Mass Effect is still a great experience, but it's in the sequels that Bioware just cooks, weaving its classic choice-and-consequence RPG formula around a Star Trek-style planet of the week structure. The combat is a lot of fun, with a mix of cover shooter basics and space magic that can reach ridiculously powerful levels. There are also a lot of brooding cosmic enemies that need to be thwacked.

I think about Mass Effects the same way I used to think about the Saturday shows that I watched as a child, and I mean this as the highest compliment. There are games I've loved for years that haven't lost any of their luster. If you haven't tried them yet, then you can't go wrong at this price.
