MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries Critic Reviews

A near-perfect marriage between a furiously intense action title and a complex role-playing/simulation game.

Mercenaries offers this -- all that makes MechWarrior great -- and then packages it into an incredibly robust, varied, distinct, and different offering that enthralls, engrosses, and begs to be played.

One of the most satisfying games of 2002.

Loaded with 40 new missions, 19 multiplayer maps, some new weapons, and mechs, this is a must have for any MW fan.

For now, though, Mercenaries reigns as the king of computer BattleTech games.

I LOVE the fact that the engine works this good, and I would be perfectly fine with it being used for the next 3 or 4 games....but they shouldn't be charging $50.

The good thing about this Mercenaries remake is that it manages to capture the atmosphere of the previous game, while adding a more intuitive Mech Lab interface and controls (inherited from MechWarrior 4) and more mechs on screen than ever!

Its separate parts don’t look like much, but as a whole, they work well.

Kudos to the developer for the fact that the game ran trouble free without a patch—only the third game I’ve played in the last month for which that was true.

Squeezing the last possible drop of gaming goodness out of aging technology yields a tasty treat indeed.

The real-time strategy of MechCommander and the action of MechAssault are merely two examples of how the Inner Sphere and Clan battles in the 31st century can still engage gamers.

With such a popular franchise, you won't have much trouble finding a game to join, and even practicing against the AI while you hone your skills is enjoyable.

Everything was handed to the development team on a platter – a working engine, complete with all basic content (textures, models, terrain) and this is the best they can come up with?

A fine addition to the long running series, but it doesn't do anything new or groundbreaking. It’s more of the same, and for many that's exactly what they are looking for.

There's not much new in MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, but what's here works reasonably well.

The focus on cash and reputation provides a nice break from the usual fair. If you like giant walking robots , then you have to get this game.

You can make it through the game in one day of heavy play... That said, while it lasts, MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries is both compelling and absorbing.

Doesn't contain novel graphics, audio or gameplay, but it does offer more of what worked so well before. Given the short length of the campaign, Mercenaries might have fared better as an expansion pack.

The engine is a couple years old and not as cool-looking as contemporary games or even "MechAssault" for the Xbox... Also, the audio is unremarkable.
