Konami admits Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 1 was a bit of a dud at launch and promises to 'do all we can' not to repeat this' with Volume 2.
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 1 was released almost a full year ago in a rather mediocre state. Konami never promised remasters, just basic ports of the OG Metal Gears and MGS 1 to 3; but even so, we still got versions of these games on PC that left a lot of room for improvement. There were audio glitches and audio muddiness, as well as missing options. Some versions of MGS 1 weren't even downloadable. Overall, it's not what you would expect from a series that is so beloved as MGS.
Konami has been working on these ports for quite some time now. They're not where they should be yet, but they're much better than before. The company has said that it would like to skip this step for the second volume of Master Collection, which I still think will be MGS 4's PC release.
In the second episode, Noriaki Okamura, Konami's (very amiable) MGS head at the time, said: "We're worried about Vol 1's rough launch." "We're doing everything we can to avoid that [with Volume 2.]"
We'll have to wait a little while to see if Okamura keeps his promise. Konami is currently working on Metal Gear Solid Delta, MGS3's ultra faithful remake that is scheduled to be released sometime this year. I imagine that we won't hear much about Master Collection Volume 2 until it's released.
I still (obviously), hope Konami learned its lesson. I'm more excited to have the OG MGS on PC than any remake. The sorry state in which Volume 1 was released was a real shot through the chest. I hope someone is still working on patches at Konami headquarters. There are many issues that have been fixed, but some lingering irritations remain. I'm crossing my fingers that Okamura's comments about a possible 4K upgrade for Volume 1 of the previous Production Hotline will come true. These games look great in 800p on my steam deck. On my 1440p screen? On my 1440p monitor?
What will Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 contain? It's hard to say. MGS 4 and Peace Walker are the most likely candidates, but there's no other MGS game that hasn't been released.
I suppose Konami could bundle MGS 5 and Ground Zeroes together and call it a night, but that would be a bit underwhelming considering how playable these games are already. Konami should surprise us all with a Metal Gear Acid port, Ghost Babel or Portable Ops. Either that, or a Revengeance 4K version.
What about all of the above options? It's fine to do that.
