Monster Hunter Wilds' nastiest monster yet has fans in a state of horror and delight.

Monster Hunter is not a stranger to bizarre creature designs. The roster is full of majestic beasts, but there are also some freaks. The Khezu, a flabby drooling lamprey with wingtips, stands alongside the regal Teostra, and the imposing Zinogre. Its rubbery, veined flesh is gaining new dimensions of disturbing vascularity as Capcom's graphics technology advances. Monster Hunter Wilds' latest monster has raised the bar for creature detestability. Behold the Rompopolo.

The latest bipedal brute Wyvern from Monster Hunter, the Rompopolo, was revealed yesterday along with the Oilwell Basin area it calls home. Whereas other brutes wyverns, such as the Deviljho or Anjanath, have more traditional tyrannosaurid characteristics, Rompopolo has a much more horrifying appearance. It's a dinosaur-sized hybrid between a kiwi, a mosquito and a hemorrhoid.

It's purple. It's engorged. It's engorged. It's got nasty little gecko feet.

Rompopolo is a vile creature, but the sacs aren’t just for display. In a tweet by the official Monster Hunter X Twitter account, Capcom explains that Rompopolo "can inject gas from its tip of tail into the surrounding oililt for explosive effects!" Great!

Let's call the reactions to Rompopolo 'enthusiastic'. The instinctive revulsion Rompopolo invokes is the perfect motivation for many hunters. Palodromy, a Reddit user, declared that he must be the first person to kill 1,000 Rompopolo because it was an insult to God. I am His strongest warrior. Another fan on X echoed this sentiment, saying, "I am going Bully this monster, mark my words."

Others find joy in the revulsion of those who scoff at the monstrous creature and its horrendous shapes. "This guy looks disgusting." One user on X replied "10/10 no notes" while another said "This mf is ugly asf (great designs).

I admit it: I'm eager to hammer a few of Rompopolo’s poison-filled bags, especially after seeing the backbreaking outcome of its turf battle with fellow Oilwell Basin residents Ajarakan. Even though Rompopolo's design is upsetting, I still like it. Monster Hunter: World, while its designs for the new monsters were excellent, they played it safe, possibly to avoid scaring away the larger audience it was hoping to attract. It seems that Monster Hunter's designers still want to be weird in Wilds.

Rompopolo and I will have to wait until February for the full release of Monster Hunter Wilds. I think I can manage.
