It deserves to stand on its own as one of the best recent examples of not only a pixel art aesthetic, but as an excellent combination of run 'n gunning, platforming and exploration. The game benefits from paying homage to multiple 16-bit ancestors rather than strictly sticking to its celluloid source material; The Mummy Demastered is a polished, accomplished and satisfying adventure that will entertain more than just Metroidvania fans.

The Mummy Demastered gives Switch owners a Metroidvania style game, while also delivering an experience that brings in some twists of its own. It has a few small warts that hold it back from the classic status of the video game franchises that inspired it, but the fact that can be said for a licensed game in 2017 is nothing short of remarkable.

The Mummy Demastered feels less like a movie tie-in and more like a love letter to the metroidvania genre. The art style will appease a retro gamer appetite while it brings some modern elements to keep it fresh and engaging. If you're a fan of games of this ilk, then it is a must-have purchase. If you're not sure what metroidvania is, give it a go anyway. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

The Mummy Demastered is probably going to be, like all of WayForward’s games, a bit of a niche and cult classic. It’s a movie tie-in that shouldn’t be good, but is. I have no idea how it got made, but I’m super glad it did. And honestly, I now will probably rent the Tom Cruise movie. It won’t be as fun as the game, but it does have Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll, so there’s that. The Mummy Demastered is out today on PS4, PC, XB1, and the Switch. It’s $20, and that feels about right for the 10 or so hours you’ll get from this throwback adventure.

Even in the face of it's most frustrating elements, The Mummy Demastered isn’t a bad game. It’s just disappointing, more reminiscent of WayForward’s okay past licensed work than any of their more transcendent Shantae games. With a credits-rolling completion lasting about five hours, this game thankfully doesn’t overstay its welcome, but irritation is a regular occurrence along the way. This has way more in common with the reboot it's tied to than we all hoped.
