While the name change from Stellaris: Nexus to Nexus 5X may not have worked in the game’s favour, Nexus 5“ does deserve to stand in the spotlight. It manages to condense the dozens of ours of a traditional 4X game into 60-90 minutes while retaining much of the strategic maneuvering and political intrigue. While it may not appease those wanting to pour in hour after hour in single-player matches, those looking for faster, more accessible games or that focus on multiplayer should definitely give this one a look.

That’s not to say Nexus 5X is bad for single players. It’s just the kind of game that gets a little tiresome if you play more than one match in a sitting. Perhaps future expansions could help fix this, but for now, Nexus 5X is definitely best played with other people.

Despite those minor gripes, Nexus 5X is a fantastic turn-based strategy game to play on a game night: It’s easy to get into, has strategic depth, and an important social element that will make you hate your friends – at least for the duration of the game.
