Nioh 2: The Tengu's Disciple Critic Reviews

I found this long awaited Season Pass and DLC to be worth every minute, even if I died hundreds of times. The new locations, Yokai boss battles, weapons, and enemies all intensified the demanding and challenging game. While I do wish the overall story was a bit deeper, maybe more will be explained in the two upcoming expansions.

As a stand-alone experience, The Tengu’s Disciple is a bit on the short end and there’s not much to the story at all, but it does provide some of the best boss battles to date. If the rest of the upcoming DLC provides the same level of gameplay and showdown quality as this chapter does, then Nioh 2 is going to have some incredible longevity going forward.

Although a bit light on main missions, the amount of new content on offer here makes The Tengu’s Disciple a must for anyone who enjoyed the base game. The new weapon is a blast to use and the new difficulty ensures that those players who had capped out all of their gear and explored all regions fully will now have an incentive to play through not just the new content but also previous missions as well. Hopefully Team Ninja continue to support Nioh 2 with more content that is as high a quality as this is, and, going off of their past record, I feel confident in saying that I think that they will knock it out of the park… Let’s just hope that the wait is nowhere near as long between releases this time. Nioh 2 is already one of the best games of the year and this first DLC pack just serves to cement it in that position.

The Tengu's Disciple is more of the same and that's largely okay. The historical figures and all-new yokai are memorable, the two main missions have good pacing, and the Splitstaff is just plain cool to wield.

Nioh 2: Tengo's Disciple remains on the same excellent level as the base game, avoiding overdoing it, but still giving a good handful of hours of new content.

The new main and side missions matter as they take the same fast Soulslike and twist it in just the right ways, adding in more variety to a game with already such a great amount of it. The Tengu’s Disciple’s few missions benefit from the core game’s strengths, but also augmenting that core game in return by having abilities, gear, and a new extra hard difficulty that fold back into and improve that base experience. It’s not a revolutionary piece of DLC, but, much like the armor and weapons it adds to the game, it enhances an already-strong and relentless warrior.

The Tengu’s Disciple is only the first part of a trilogy of DLC and it definitely feels as such. People who are mainly looking for a narrative will probably end up disappointed by this first piece of content, but those who enjoy playing Nioh 2 and like to engage in its loot-based systems will find enough content to pull them back into the game. Whatever the case, it turns out that even five months later Nioh 2 still remains an extremely fun game to play. A DLC with a weaker story does not change that. In fact the content that is outside the story, that plays around with Nioh’s nature as a loot game, only makes it better.

For its modest $10 price, The Tengu’s Disciple is absolutely brimming with new Nioh 2 content. None of that content is groundbreaking or any more or less exceptional than what Nioh 2 already offers, but it is nonetheless an extremely worthwhile reason to come back to what is certainly one of 2020’s best action games. And for those who never dropped it in the first place, it's even better thanks to the addition of the Dream of the Demon difficulty and exciting new loot to experiment with.

Despite its short and rushed story, Nioh 2’s first DLC pack has some great content to play. The Tengu’s Disciple game fully pays for its price. If you finished Nioh 2 and want some more, you are definitely in the right place.

Nioh 2: The Tengu's Disciple is a very short experience that tries to tell a whole story, but at the same time it acknowledges that it's still missing some parts of the overall narrative. Fans of the base game should definitely give this a go.

The Tengu's Disciple is a great addition to Nioh 2. It was great to go back and play through some of the original game locations before the protagonist William made his way through Yokai-infested Japan. The Splitstaff adds a great new weapon to master and some of the fresh enemies provide a great new challenge. Unfortunately, some hurdles the expansion puts in front of you feel incredibly unfair even for Nioh's standards.

All in all, Nioh 2: The Tengu's Disciple is a solid piece of DLC. It doesn't break the mold, and it doesn't offer much that's new. What it does offer is more of the enjoyable gameplay that made Nioh 2 so fun. The new weapon is a nice bonus, even if it isn't for every player, and there's about 9-10 hours of content here. It's only for Nioh die-hards, but at $10, it's easily worth the price.

If you played the DLC for the first Nioh, then you already know what you're going to find in The Tengu's disciple: a downloadable content aimed for the hardcore players who want everything of Team Ninja's game. But, for that price, it's hard to say no to some more yokai slicing action..

Team Ninja's proposal once again reaffirms the conservative approach of the studio, between the meshes of a narrative arc that runs out all too quickly.

The Tengu’s Disciple is a beefy DLC for its price: the new missions are long and, most of the times, challenging, and the staff has many tools to play with. If you are ready for some serious grind, this expansion can keep you busy for hours and hours.

We expect much more than what has been done so far.

New players to Nioh 2 should definitely consider saving their money until after they have completed the main story, but if they get through that 100 hours and are desperate for more, they can confidently pick up Nioh 2: The Tengu's Disciple and expect more of the same terrific gameplay - just not much else, and not as much of it as they'd perhaps like.
