Okage: Shadow King Critic Reviews

A must for any fan of Tim Burton's style of movies or those of us who like our games to sometimes be a little left of center.

Okage's extreme weirdness does level off after a while into a mostly familiar RPG, but its overall charm and humor make the experience well worth it.

Definitely one of the game's strong points is that it gives you lots of options in the dialogue, so you really feel a part of the story.

It's a trimmed down and dumbed-down RPG for younger players that just may find an adult audience with its sense of humor and hilarious story line.

A wonderful mix of ironic humor, classic gameplay and gorgeous graphics.

For anyone who appreciates bizarre characters and storylines, the game is especially appealing. The graphics are fantastic, although the gameplay itself is standard overall.

Even with its flaws, Okage remains a breath of fresh air for a genre in desperate need of the kind of originality and variety that it provides.

Eclectic, eccentric, and unconventional...only the gameplay had remained entertaining and the novelty hadn’t worn off – Okage could have easily taken the game world by storm.

The story itself may not live up to the expectations of an engrossing plot with surprising twists, but the light-hearted humor of the game compensates somewhat.

Its also a little short and can be beaten in around 24-35 hours.

It has a pretty unique feel and does some things that are different than you normally see in the genre.

The game’s battles look nice and move quickly, but the character animation is stiff, and the menu is too clunky and confusing given the limited number of battle options at your disposal.

If you want to play an RPG that doesn’t pretend to be a dramatic tale or one that won’t require a lot of your time, Okage is a good choice.

Though it has plenty of rough edges, the wacky cartoonish graphics and the bizarre sense of humor compensate nicely. Excessive loading is obnoxious.

Now, once you get into the traditional elements of the RPG such as battle, the comedy continues. While the zany names get old, as well as the dialogue, the game is pretty funny overall.

While visually diverting, Okage is only slightly above average overall.

Their gameplay was unlike any that came before, and it followed a comfortable rhythm. Okage: Shadow King has its charm. But it is, ironically, too off-kilter for me to consider it a cult classic.

There's one big problem. There's no game here.

Spends too much time trying to achieve a kind of “Nightmare Before Christmas”-level of cool weirdness, rather than keeping the player playing.

The only shadows Okage: Shadow King is going to be ruling at my house are the ones under the stack of other games I'd rather be playing.
