Once Human reveals the inner Sims-player that even my loud FPS buddies have within them
I'm beginning to think that I made a big mistake by not playing Once Human. It seems that despite the game's shooter-focused exterior, everyone in this free-to play survival game is spending their time building homes. Dammit, I like building houses.
I was wrong to assume that Once Human would be more PvP-style shooter action like DayZ, than crafting survival like Valheim. So I stayed out of the game when my friends started playing it. My nightly voice chat, which is usually filled with yelling and shouting about Rainbow Six Siege or Call of Duty, has become suspiciously quiet. It's like when you realize that you haven't heard a sound from your dog in the last hour.
What's everyone up to?" "What's everyone doing?" asked one of them in the middle of this unusually quiet moment.
"Just doing some work on my house," said another. They worked for hours.
All just working on their homes. Since launch, the majority of posts on the Once Human subreddit have been of elaborate base builds. Even one of my favorite cozy gamers has jumped on the bandwagon, making jokes about what happens when Sims players start playing Once Human.
I expect this in the majority of crafting survival games. I was not surprised to see huge builds in Palworld, Ark, or even Fallout 76. I assumed that a game with PUBG's look wouldn't inspire the same sense of homemaking. It seems that it has.
After I warned my friend that I was about to call him out, he admitted: "All I have been doing for the last three days is grinding furniture blueprints."
It reminded me of what former Sims series leader Rod Humble said last year, that men would lie in focus groups about how they spent their time playing when in fact they had just redecorated the bathroom. I'm glad we've evolved and are more willing to admit we spend a lot of time playing a gritty shooting game unlocking blueprints for our homes. We're all Sims fans on the inside.
Here are some cool things Once Human players have created so far to celebrate:
It took me way too much time. I need to do the interior but I need more plans. From r/OnceHumanOfficial
After 18,000 gravel, the Once Buoyant is complete! I'm amazed at the scale of this building system, despite frustrating snapping problems. From r/OnceHumanOfficial
The coolest thing I've ever built in a game, but I hit the decor limitation... from r/OnceHumanOfficial
