Overwatch 2 is offering another expensive deal: the once-free Oni Genji Skin is now available to players who first spend $75 at Blizzard Gear.
In my time, I had to play Heroes of the Storm in order to get the Genji Oni Skin. Then Blizzard released it a few years later so that players could get it in lootboxes or in the store for 1000 OW Coins. After all these years, Blizzard has brought back the Oni skin and is giving it away for free. Sort of.
In the Blizzard Shop, if you spend $75/PS70, you will also receive the Genji Oni skin free. The offer is valid until September 16, 2020, and is only available to users in the US or UK who are over 18 years old. You can only purchase one Genji Oni skin per purchase. Read more about eligibility here. There are only 500 codes to be redeemed, so make sure you check that the promotion still exists before purchasing products worth $75/PS70.
If you were already planning to spend this kind of money in the store then the Oni Genji Skin is a nice bonus. But, if you are just buying it for the skin, the deal isn't really worth anything. This skin is available in Overwatch 2 at a cost of 1,500 silver coin. You can earn this skin in the premium battle passes by level 55. There are 2,000 total silver coins, so you probably have plenty of coins lying around. I have a little over 7,000 coins left from completing my last few battle passes. It doesn't matter that this skin is legendary if you can get it for free on Overwatch 1.
"Shop prices may be shady, but Overwatch truly is free to play," says one player. "Skins are not required, and everyone has access to the heroes." Even if they were paid for them, everyone got to have them the following season. Compare this to Val, or Apex where you need to spend a lot to unlock everything."
It's not necessarily bad to get a legendary skin for spending money at the Blizzard gear shop. It's even okay, as long as you know that you don't need to spend so much cash to get it. This is called "Price Anchoring", which Blizzard uses in games such as Diablo 4 or when you look at World of Warcraft's subscription prices.
I'd advise players who are interested in cosmetics to check out the prices first in the hero gallery, since they're usually the cheapest (unless you want a bundle).
