The fact that you can change the graphics instantly is just plain cool, and creates a real "how'd they do that?" feeling, but both the angled view and the 2D "arcade" camera -- where you view the game through a tiny arcade cabinet monitor -- are novelties.

R-Type Dimension is the best adaptation ever made to the next-gen of a classic shoot'em up. It is a comprehensive title, full of details for both old and new players, and very fun. Its difficulty is huge, but its game options are so customizable and accessible that will please both veterans and newcomers.

It's a mindless button masher and that is all it needs to be, that's what makes it so fun.

A brilliant shooter from when it was originally out and even better now with a nice new set of effects.

If you fondly remember the R-Types of old and have been itching to feel that sense of intense difficulty again on your console, then you’d be crazy not to download this one.

A tough but lovely recreation of two of the greatest orthodox shoot-'em-ups ever made.

The gameplay is still as addictive as ever, as you tear a hole through the Bydo Empire using power-ups such as reflective lasers and missiles. The difficulty is incredibly high (bullets come at you from every direction), but the newly added stage select and Infinity options relieve some frustration.

For a 22-year-old game it stands up remarkably well, but it's a shame that a few omissions prevent R-Type Dimensions from being all it could have been.

A feature-rich shooter that can appeal to people with either a passing or a serious interest in the genre.

R-Type journeys into the third dimensions but a lack of control and high entry fee spoils the trip.

R-Type and R-Type II, two classics coin-ops, are together in R-Type Dimensions. Two graphics modes: original 2-D and all new 3-D in high definition. Game modes can be played as single player or multiplayer missions, either locally or over Xbox LIVE. A good retro pack with reminds the quality of this Shoot'em Up.

Nevertheless, it’s one of the best retro retreads you can find on XBLA and Tozai should be applauded for doing the original game justice without trying to get too clever with it.

Despite the relatively high difficulty level, this is a prime example of old-school gaming at its best.

A lovely recreation of two of the greatest shoot-'em-ups.

All up Dimensions is a solid remake of an all-time classic, and is much more convenient than plugging in old systems to give the game a blasting. If you like R-Type, or shooters, then this game is a must.

R-Type Dimensions is a worthy attempt in catering to series fans, shooter fans, and retro fans at the same time. It’s easy to get into, but quite hard to master.

You can’t ignore that R-Type Dimensions offers another taste of classic gaming, with some enhancements to make it more attractive and contemporary, and that’s playable from the comfort of the living-room couch.

SouthEnd Interactive have put some effort into this "remake" and it supports both purists and newcomers who wish to check out a classic arcade game. The visuals are good, considering the age of this game and the gameplay still works.

You might fail to see what all the fuss is about if you're not a shmup historian, but for the faithful it's a pleasure to rediscover R-Type with friends and flash.

Retro fans will no doubt rejoice, as will gamers who love the pad breaking frustration of a challenge.
