R-Type is still an insanely difficult shmup that is best consumed by those well-versed in the genre or looking to experience a classic entry in it, but those looking to experience this monument to old-school gaming will find a fantastic port awaits them.

It has a quality to it, be it the great soundtrack, great graphics (for the time) and challenging gameplay, that keeps you coming back for more.

R-Type doesn't have much longevity going for it – no online leaderboards, no bonus levels, no R-Type II – but considering its two dollar price tag, you could buy worse for your Apple device.
