Arthur Morgan's voice actress has his own "canon ending" for RDR 2. The only thing he would change is how he pronounces Colm O'Driscoll: "Rockstar made me do it wrong." I told them that it was incorrect. They didn't seem to care.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 finally arrived on PC five years ago, I was astonished at how much I enjoyed it. But how could I? Arthur Morgan is a wonderful character: nuanced, heartfelt, clearly written and with a lot of love. His actor Roger Clark has voiced him perfectly.
Who is still happy to chat about RDR 2 and sit down with fans. Clark answered a number of fan questions in a recent Gamology interview, including how it felt to do mocap ("very involved," sounds like), and if he would ever play Arthur as a live-action version ("Danny Devito, or we riot," said Clark).
I find his answers to the other two questions most interesting. The questions were whether there was a particular scene in the game that he struggled with, and if he would make any changes to the story or his performance. He then went on to discuss RDR 2's endings, spoilers ahead of course, and which one he considered to be his personal "canon."
Clark describes the possible endings of the game. "There are two versions of the game: one is a high-honour option to go help John and the other is a low-honour option to return for the money," he says. "I don't see the point in going back to get the money. Arthur's days are over." What good is money going to do for him? You could as well help John."
This is absolutely true. Arthur's worldview and heart are irrevocably broken by that point. Even if he didn't have terminal tuberculosis, he has been ravaged by the disease. At that point, Arthur's life is a mess and he doesn't know what he can do.
"I think that returning to John and helping him with honor is my canon end." Mine too. I've never even played the game with a low-honour score. It wouldn't feel right to Arthur.
He would change the way he pronounces Colm O'Driscoll. Clark is an Irish American actor and he knows that the correct pronunciation of Colm is "Column", not "Comb." But Rockstar made Clark say it incorrectly when voicing Arthur. After all, the character would have little reason to know how to pronounce Irish names.
"The only thing that I regret is that I said Colm O'Driscoll wrong." Rockstar made me mispronounce it. I told them that it was incorrect. Clark says, "They didn't care." The Gamology video shows a scene where the Irish character Sean Macguire corrects Kieran's name aggressively. I've never seen this before. He clearly never told Arthur. (Or, it's equally likely that he did, but Arthur didn't notice).
Yes, someone did ask the obvious question. "A lot people ask me 'Well, what's [RDR3] going to be?' Clark replied, "Well, no idea." Even if I knew, I'd tell you I had no idea. Rockstar is currently focusing on GTA 6, so I'm going to guess that we're all going to have no idea in the near future.
