Reverie Knights Tactics is an interesting RPG that tells a fascinating if a bit short story. Once you beat the game, you can’t help but think “That can’t be it, where is the rest of it?” and wish to see the plot develop further.

Reverie Knights Tactics is a solid experience for anyone looking for a tactical battle title with a classic look and plot. There are no major innovations, but all the core systems work well, offering plenty of ways to deal with the combat puzzles at its core. Aurora is a solid protagonist, and the rest of the cast is likable. But everything moves too slowly for the full experience to be fun. During combat, I watched the same animations hundreds of times, more if I wanted to hit all the listed goals. On the world map, I had to move from one non-descript area to another. The developer at 40 Giants Entertainment had good ideas for Reverie Knights Tactics but they needed better implementation to keep me engaged in the long term.

Reverie Knights Tactics features straightforward mechanics, which might leave mega fans of the genre wanting more depth, but overall, while Reverie Knights Tactics brings nothing new to the genre, it is a fun challenge for people who enjoy tactical games.

Undeniably a love letter to old-school tactical RPGs, Reverie Knights Tactics packs in enough charm and replayability to please fans of the genre, but won’t be knocking the likes of Fire Emblem or Disgaea off their respective perches any time soon. Its comic book aesthetic also takes a while to get used to, but like the nuances of its story or its branching character development, its charm grows as you play. However, it doesn’t really offer anything that fans of TRPGs won’t have experienced elsewhere, and the lack of final polish undermines its aspirations.

While Reverie Knights Tactics has some novel ideas for its turn-based battles, it falls short in just every other aspect. Its exploration is bland, its story lacklustre and its visuals unappealing. With a tighter focus on what works, this game could have been promising. As it stands, however, the experience of playing this RPG is ultimately an unsatisfying one.

An absurdist collection of pseudo-tactical puzzles.

The tactical part of Reverie Knights Tactics is mildly interesting in its 'puzzle' nature, if it does not wear out its welcome through heavy RNG outcomes. However, severe loss of quality elsewhere really drags the experience down, the levelling/stats system is fairly boring, the character design is bad, and the story is utterly forgettable for how long it drones on between combat sections. There might be something here worth salvaging, but it would need to be hacked up and pasted back together first.
