PSA: Silent Hill 2 remake contains a soft-lock glitch at the end Brookhaven Hospital
Silent Hill 2 was released this week and while it is working well, there is a soft lock glitch which can make it impossible for you to continue without reloading a previous save. The glitch occurs near the end of Brookhaven Hospital, but it can be avoided.
Eurogamer, as well as many other helpful fans on social networks, have noticed that you can soft lock your game if you interact with a porthole on a third-floor door at Brookhaven Hospital. Here's an easy-to-understand guide on how to avoid softlocking.
You'll see a short cutscene after entering the third level of Bookhaven. It will show you through a small porthole in a door. You'll have to manually save your game before you can go to the rooftop when you return to Bookhaven's third floor. Once you are on the other end of the door, you should autosave. But be careful not to interact with the porthole. Continue on your way.
If you accidentally hit the button and get teleported to the wrong door, you will be teleported to the other side. This will prevent you from exploring the area that you just reached. It also soft locks the game without a way to advance. You should be able reload the autosave if you accidentally hit the button. However, some people are unable to do so. You made a manual save before you reached the rooftop. This should help you get back on track.
I was able easily to replicate the softlock using a save. Bloober Team has not yet said when this issue will be fixed. However, since it is easily replicable, I hope that they can fix it in a hotfix.
The remake of Silent Hill 2 has done well for itself. Developer Bloober Team reported over a half-million copies sold, and commentators praised it for staying true the original's vision--like the fact that protagonist James isn't really a cool guy.
Kerry Brunskill, a critic for PC Gamer's Silent Hill 2 review, said that "Bloober Team’s remake adheres closely to the high standards of the original but sometimes stumbles." "When it is good, it's excellent. Any game that adheres to the high standards of Silent Hill 2 can compete with any modern horror game. It relies too heavily on its repetitive and violent encounters."
