In a year that's slowly being dominated by indie releases, Songs of Conquest from Lavapotion is a stand-out hit.

Songs of Conquest is a respectful and heartfelt tribute to Heroes of Might and Magic, but it shouldn't be considered a simple copy and paste. In fact, Lavapotion has masterfully added some personal touches to that solid turn-based gameplay which, together with the splendid contemporary pixel art, make it modern and nostalgic, romantic and exciting. We eagerly await further content: could this be the beginning of a new legend?

Brilliant, entertaining, and fantastic turn-based strategy game that will test strategic thinking. Songs of Conquest excellently modernizes an old genre, proving it still has life. The pixel art style is mesmerizing, the music captivating, and the abundance of content will keep players engaged for years.

Songs of Conquest is a true love letter to Heroes of Might & Magic. A game full of reasonable nostalgia and simply a great product worthy of your time. And it proves that this genre still has a place for new things without destroying its foundations.

Songs of Conquest is a turn-based strategy game that fits into the mold of Heroes of Might and Magic, trying to fill the void left by the latter, now missing from our screens for almost a decade. Despite a few flaws in the single-player campaign, Lavapotion's video game features a near-perfect balance of the four playable factions, all of which are well characterized, as well as a huge amount of content, including full support for community-made stuff.

Songs of Conquest revives the spirit of Heroes of Might an Magic 3 and strikes a really good figure.

For those looking for a strategy game to plug away at for the rest of May, Songs of Conquest may just be the ticket. It's crammed with content, has a polished sheen that many other games fail to achieve, is easy to pick up and play, and has systems that make even its more complex elements approachable or surmountable.

Songs of Conquest is a game that we didn't expect: practically a new Heroes of Might & Magic with a totally different and much more interesting magic system and a leaner and dynamic structure.

Songs of Conquest would have profited from losing some of the inherent ticks of this particular sub-genre, but it is still one of the most beautiful and relaxing "just one more round" games of the year.

The developers at Lavapotion deliver a first-class indie game that manages to capture the spirit of the great Heroes of Might & Magic better than any other competitor has ever been able to. If game depth and scope are more important to you than graphical opulence, Songs of Conquest is a well-made strategy game that will keep you enthralled for many hours. And who knows, maybe this is also the start of a great series. After all, the first Heroes of Might & Magic also impressed primarily with its gameplay values.

While its battles can be surprisingly punishing and occasionally uneven, there's a lot of heart in this gorgeous turn-based tactics anthology, and the scale of its ambition just about sings through.

I like Songs of Conquest a lot. I may not quite love it, but it's colourful and rich in flavour and has more strategic depth than at first appears. Its main inspiration is clear, but it more than earns its own place in the sun.

This is the game that makes you forget about the absence of the new HOMM series. It shows attractive pixel graphics and packed with variety thanks to the strategic elements that were not in previous HOMMs. However, UI and somewhat insufficient map design needs to be improved. If they manage to overcome some shortcomings, you may not have to play HOMM3 anymore.

Songs of Conquest is as beautiful and bewitching as it suggests, it's a worthy heir to the old Heroes of Might and Magic. It brings significant and welcome improvements to the old formula and will already know how to keep you busy from its early access. A few rebalancing and some improvements in the interfaces, and it could well become a staple of the genre.

Wiping the floor with your stupendous army can be fun, but is it as fun as being a clever underdog or meticulous planner? There’s great satisfaction in winning a battle that is challenging, but fair. Songs of Conquest was the experience I was actually looking for when I purchased HOMM 7 recently. It’s bewildering that something as simple as a creature cap, and a few other significant tweaks, could transform an intensely familiar genre experience into a new game that I was excited to learn all over again.
