Star Wars Outlaws' new creative director promises to focus on three "key areas": Combat, stealth and controls
Ubisoft's first developer update reveals that Drew Rechner, who has worked on The Division and Avatar, has replaced Julian Gerighty as creative director.
Rechner wrote: "I am very excited to take on the role of creative Director for Star Wars Outlaws, and to work with the incredibly passionate staff here at Massive Entertainment as well as our talented codevelopment studios around world and Lucasfilm Games."
"I personally thank you for your positive response, our community, to the game. We love the fan art, comments, and video you've created for the game. It continues to inspire the team. "We hope you are enjoying your journey with Kay and Nix across the Outer Rim so far."
Rechner worked as an AI designer for The Division 2 under Gerighty and as a game designer for The Division before taking on the role of creative director of Star Wars Outlaws.
Rechner has big dreams for the game. It has already received several updates and has been accelerated to launch on Steam. The developers are focusing on three "key areas:" Combat, stealth and controls. He said that these will "[embrace] more player choice than ever before whether it's going in blasters blazing, or anything in between." Future updates will reveal details on the changes to come, leading up to the 1.4 update on November 21st. This is when Star Wars Outlaws goes live on Steam.
It may seem strange to swap creative directors for a game which has only been released for a few months, especially given Star Wars Outlaws "soft" performance. However, there is nothing wrong in this case. Gerighty will now focus on The Division. He was appointed as the new executive director of the series when Ubisoft announced The Division 3 in 2023. As part of this announcement, Ubisoft stated that Gerighty would continue in his current position as creative Director of Star Wars Outlaws up until the launch of the game.
