I'm surprised by how much I dig the virtual controls; Halfbot and Vlambeer did a heck of a job translating the action to the touchscreen and then making it feel as natural, and as split-second responsive as the game's PC and Mac counterparts.

With three stages to play on and dozens of characters and weapons to unlock, Super Crate Box is easily one of the best games on iOS, if not one of the best games in the last five years. Period.

Super Crate Box may not be new, then, but on iOS it's not to be missed. This belongs up there with Drop7, Solipskier and SpellTower as an example of the very best that the App Store offers. It's endlessly cheerful, and cheerfully deadly, and it's the perfect digital companion for the month of January, with its frosty clarity and new years' resolutions. Here is a piece of design that offers a path to true mastery through careful practice. Here is a game that provides unceasing opportunities for self-improvement.

Vlambeer deserve credit for making a fantastic game, and along with Halfbot, they deserve a ton of credit for making this a shining example of how to bring this kind of game to mobile properly. Even after all the weapons were unlocked, I still found myself chasing after the unlockable characters and modes that require superhuman-level performances in order to succeed. This sets a high bar for other iOS releases to try and match this year.

A spot-on port of the game that inspired Muffin Knight, Super Crate Box features a retro pixel look, a plethora of weapons, and outstanding touch controls to create a challenging yet thrilling experience.

One of those games you must try and install in your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Its gameplay is simple and unique, very demanding if we are not able to adapt, but really addictive if we get engaged by the game.

If you already tried the freeware version of Super Crate Box, then you know how fast, immediate and fun this game is. You can really play for hours and never get bored, trying to unlock all the weapons and all the game modes.

Super Crate Box is a stark and challenging indie game shot through with humour and care.

Short of physical controls, Super Crate Box is a near perfect adaption of the 2010 smash-hit; fast, frantic and fun - the three f's all action fans should be able to appreciate.

Elegant in its simplicity yet challenging in its execution, Super Crate Box is a game that should easily satisfy fans of classic gaming.

Ferociously compulsive.

Extremely simple, but also extremely addictive. For less than a dollar it's a steal.

This App is addicting like few of other ones on iOS. For a dollar you can smash tons of crates with so many weapons in the old arcade way that all we miss a bit.

Super Crate Box is a darling of a game, then, hindered somewhat by the platform it's on. It's absolutely impossible to not like it, but this version is easy not to love.

Super Crate Box is a fun game with excellent presentation, and a quick twitchy gameplay easy to get hooked on. There are some issues with the controls, and collision detection cramping the quality quite a bit. Still it is one of the most fun games you can play on your device at the moment.

Pick up crates, get weapons and use them to kill enemies - Super Crate Box is one of those games that are easy to learn but hard to master. It's a good game, but the controls worked better in the PC and Mac versions.

The original PC version is still justifiably popular but touchscreen controls only turn a difficult game into an unreasonably frustrating one.

Super Crate Box is not without its merits, and when experienced in an iCade with physical buttons the experience is sublime. Unfortunately, standard iOS play only frustrates. Virtual buttons do not mix well with high score tables and instant deaths.

Strong action and high difficulty. Quick way to resume the gameplay of Super Crate Box even if its poor contents can be frustrating.

The iOS port of Super Crate Box is finally here, but it fails to outdo its imitator in every way.
