The Knight Witch not only looks stunning, but the gameplay is tight and inventive, providing an enjoyable bullet hell extravaganza.

The Knight Witch is a good game with well-executed familiar mechanics. Combat, especially in the bigger and more open areas, is a joy, even when it’s against a tough boss with some dirty tricks up his mechanical sleeve. The narrative is interesting enough, even if some of the fourth-wall-breaking might be hit or miss, and the game looks impressive. Play it in short sessions, with a clear goal in mind and a willingness to tweak approaches on failure (don’t forget about the cheat options). The Knight Witch offers a good mix of action and exploration, even for players who have little experience with the genre.

The Knight Witch is a solid shoot'em up with a metroidvania progression where exploration of beau-tifully designed levels is mixed with frantic shooter action, which sometimes turns into a bullet hell. The card system for managing special abilities invites us to experiment trying to sort out the most appropriate build for each type of situation, and the character build, although quite simple, requires tactical choices that influence the gameplay. The narration is maybe too trivial, often tempting you to skip some dialogues, but the shootervania formula works and the game is challenging and a lot of fun.

The Knight Witch is a whip-smart, beautifully hand-drawn bullet-hell Metroidvania.

Fans of exploration and shooters are strongly encouraged to try out The Knight Witch, because it’s a little indie title that’s going to charm you with both its story and its gameplay. What do you know? Mashing concepts together worked out pretty well here after all.

The Knight Witch is an absolutely stunning adventure. It is lacking in neither gameplay, nor performance. The combat provides a healthy serving of challenge with exactly the right amount of fun. The combat is absolutely hectic and fully encapsulates the essence of adventure. The Knight Witch will grasp you from the very beginning, and it wont let go.

All the elements for a first-class blend of twin-stick shooting and engaging exploration are present in The Knight Witch. But a few blatant blemishes and frustrating encounters mean you might not fall under its spell.

Overall, despite its sudden difficulty spikes at specific points in the story or when fighting bosses, The Knight Witch is a great way to burn off some hours when you aren’t busy and for fans of on-rail arcade shooters. It’s fun to challenge yourself as you dodge bullets that the Golems and bosses fire as you attempt to take them down.

Even with flaws, and a few too many mechanics for me to truly get lost in, I had a surprising amount of fun with The Knight Witch. I wouldn’t have thought that a bullet hell SHMUP could fit so smoothly into a Metroidvania, but that aspect of the game worked for me. While its story and characters didn’t connect as strongly as I’d have liked, it has enough personality that players looking for an interesting take on the genre should consider it.

The Knight Witch is excellent in a lot of ways despite its forbidding difficulty, the kind of game you’ll be glad to have beaten even if the journey to completion is sometimes a bit much. Rayne’s journey from coulda-been to savior goes through a number of twists and turns, the metroidvania levels are filled with a great amount of variety, and other than the occasional trap room that locks you in, the choice to shoot everything or zip on past is rarely taken away. The sky is broken and the underground is getting more dangerous than the anyone is comfortable with, but the survivors have a new knight witch to pin all their hopes on. It just may take a few dozen more respawns than expected to reach The Knight Witch‘s conclusion.
