Wordle was not looking good for me today. I had only two yellows for two rows of guessing, and I had eliminated a lot very helpful letters. My next guess would have to be special. Smart. It was just once: it put me on the right track and turned a difficult situation into an easy win. Phew.

Wordle: Learn more about it

Wordle is a daily app that presents six rows of five boxes. The goal is to guess the five-letter word and confirm or eliminate individual letters.

A strong word, such as ARISE, that contains multiple vowels, consonants and no repeating letters, is a good way to start. After you press Enter, the boxes will tell you if you got any of the letters right or not. If a box is turned, that means the letter in question is not part of the secret word. The letter is in the secret word, but it's not in the box. You've got the correct letter in the correct place.

Your second guess should complement the starting word. Use another "good"word to cover any letters you missed last time, while also avoiding any letter that you know for sure is not present in today's solution. You should be able to find some coloured squares that will help you get started.

You can then use what you have learned to narrow down your guesses to the correct word. You can only use real words and you have six attempts. (So no filling in the boxes with EEEEE just to see if it's an E.) Remember that letters can also repeat (ex: BOOKS).

Wordle was originally created by software engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, who loves word games. The game was then shared with his family and eventually released to the public. Since then, the word puzzle game has inspired a number of games such as Wordle. These games refocus the daily gimmick on music, math or geography. Wordle was so popular that it was bought by the New York Times in 2007 for seven figures. It's only a question of time until we all communicate exclusively in tricolor boxes.
