Action Game South of Midnight to be Released in 2025: Watch the Gameplay

he team at Compulsion Games, known for their work on We Happy Few and Contrast, has unveiled a new trailer for their upcoming game, South of Midnight, showcasing some exciting gameplay. In this trailer, a magical fish-whale creature teams up with the main character to avoid becoming the meal of a gigantic alligator.

South of Midnight is deeply rooted in the mythology of the American South, with the game's events unfolding in the southern regions of a fictional version of the United States. The story follows a young woman named Hazel, who, after losing her mother, becomes a "weaver" — a magical artisan capable of mending broken bonds and healing shattered spirits. As seen in the trailer, Hazel can manipulate glowing energy to fight, float in the air, and perform other magical feats. When she deals with hostile spirits, she doesn't kill them but purifies them, leaving a field of flowers where the wound once was.

Hazel's journey is accompanied by a massive catfish, and along her path, she encounters many other mythical creatures. For instance, she meets Two-Fingered Tom, a blind albino alligator the size of an island.

According to Compulsion Games, the game features a "linear but expansive" structure. Players can stick strictly to the storyline, but those who seek more will find plenty to do. The locations are filled with hidden currency and secrets waiting to be discovered.

The music for the game is composed by Olivier Derivière, a French composer known for his work on the A Plague Tale series, Dying Light 2, and Remember Me. According to Derivière, the composition in the trailer contains several hidden mysteries.

South of Midnight is set to be released in 2025 on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series. The game will also be available on Game Pass. Currently, only the English language is supported. The adventure-action game was announced a year ago.
