Amazon's God of War TV series is starting from scratch after the showrunner, executive producers and showrunner all quit.
Amazon announced that a God of War television show would be produced by the end of 2022. But until now, the production has been radio silent. After a couple of long years, we finally have some news. But it's not good.
Rafe Judkins has left the project along with executive producers Hawk Ostby, Mark Fergus and Mark Fergus (via Deadline). The report also states that the three had completed several scripts for the show's first season, but that Sony/Amazon are now looking at a different creative direction. This includes hiring a brand new writers' room.
One source told Deadline there was no bad blood between Sony and Amazon, as the studios praised their writing. Judkins continues to be the showrunner for Amazon's Wheel of Time, which was renewed in '22 for a third year. He also works with Sony on new developments.
When we first heard of the show, it was also revealed that the story would be a direct retelling of God of War 2018. "When his beloved spouse dies, Kratos embarks on a dangerous journey along with his estranged child Atreus in order to spread her ashes at the highest peak, as his wife's last wish." It's not exactly something inspired, but God of War 2018, which had a fantastic plot, is a great reason to stick with what you know works. Now that Sony and Amazon have announced new showrunners, the series is likely to take a different creative direction. It's impossible to predict how the story will unfold.
Videogame adaptations seem to be all the rage at the moment. The Borderlands movie was a travesty, and it set a new standard for videogame movies. A new Minecraft movie is also coming out, but it looks worse every time I look at the poster. That blocky sheep haunts my mind. On the other hand, I'm excited to see some adaptations. After watching the official trailer for Arcane Season 2, it's hard to not be excited. I'm also excited to see a few episodes from Amazon's Secret Level Series. The Warhammer 40k Episode looks amazing, and it will be interesting to see what happens with the Concord Episode after its failed debut.
