BioWare has announced that Dragon Age: Veilguard is on track to release its Halloween edition.
BioWare announced on X, the "Everything App" that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now gold and has completed development. While a faintly anachronistic concept in an age of digital distribution and day one patches, it's a show of confidence from BioWare that the nine-years-in-development game has indeed reached the finish line.
The fourth Dragon Age game, which began development in 2015 with former series leader Mike Laidlaw under the code name "Joplin," was formally rebooted by EA in 2018 to fit their then-live service-centric strategy. The Veilguard, now known as The Veilguard, was quietly retooled into a single-player experience after the studio's Anthem disaster. BioWare teased that the RPG would be released soon. We knew it as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf for a long while. BioWare experienced a number of high-profile staff departures, some willingly and others due to layoffs, amid these multiple name and directions changes.
PCG was a bit pessimistic when it came to The Veilguard because of all the Sturm und Drang. While not everyone has been won over by the more action-oriented direction of the game, it's made an impressive showing in a number of trailers over this summer. Veilguard was a hit with PCG news writer Joshua Wolens at first glance: It's a fantasy Mass Effect. PC Gamer's associate editor Lauren Morton, who attended a hands-on demo, was impressed with what she saw. The final game will reveal all, but for now, Mr. Market is pretty (Iron-like) bullish about The Veilguard.
It's encouraging to hear BioWare confidently state that The Veilguard will arrive on time, especially in an age of frequent last-minute game delays. On October 31, we'll know for sure if it was worth the wait.
