'Calm down!' Facepunch Studios says: Garry's Mod's successor s&box will get a sandbox feature and an alternative version of 'Sausage Men.'
It's a bit strange that the successor to Garry's Mod - s&box, pronounced Sandbox - didn't have a sandbox mode. Facepunch Studios' game development platform, announced in 2017, has finally been given a Steam page. In its first news posting, the developers confirm that it will have a sandbox.
Facepunch says in a news post that they are aware that people expect a sandbox feature from Facepunch for the engine. They have been hesitant to do so. "But as we thought more about it, we came up with a few new features which justify making it. So we're working on it and won't release it until we're done."
If you don't like "Sausage Man" models in s&box, there's more news: "We're currently working on Human models -- calm down!" I like the Sausage Men. They're cute, but also a bit off-putting.
What is s&box exactly? It's "a game engine and a platforms" that developers can use to create their own Source 2 games. It's really cool to see what people are creating in s&box: platformers and shooters, combat and driving games, and one that looks like fantasy RPG. Facepunch's aspirations are much higher than what Garry's mod achieved.
The developer says, "Our vision for S&Box isn't a platform but an engine." "We hope that you can export the games created in the engine and sell them on Steam or other places. We are working with Valve on a license. No licensing fees or royalties will be charged." Facepunch hopes that games created in the engine can be exported to other platforms.
s&box currently has a "Developer Preview", which means you can create your own game if you sign up on the official website and download it from Steam.
