'Don't get lacerated!' The Lacerator, a survival horror game that lops off limbs, has a bullet point feature.

DreadXP announced that it will publish a new horror title from Brazilian studio Games From the Abyss, called The Lacerator. It's an old-school survival horror experience. The mature content description on Steam warns that "This game contains scenes with explicit violence and gore. It also contains sensitive themes and tanks controls".

The Lacerator is an escape-room puzzle that involves being trapped in a Saw-style labyrinth created by a psychopath. Its main selling point is the removal of limbs. Losing an arm or leg is not a game-over. Instead, you'll have to find more creative ways to escape the more limbs that you lose. The trailer shows an unmoving door that you can only open with two arms. According to the press release "there are multiple main escape paths, but depending on what limbs you have left you lose access to certain of these paths." Each of these presents a different narrative that will provide answers that are not available in the other."

The Lacerator has a low-poly design with blurred textures, similar to a PS1 title. I don't think you can mess around with the graphics much. It's designed with a fixed camera, tank controls and enemies that come out of the wall at you.

The Lacerator has a distinct tone, with a pornstar protagonist and a villain who sometimes wears a skimpy two-piece leather. It's a text version of Resident Evil 2's fetishcore subtext. As much as I love a throwback to the '90s, I'm not sure if this is my vibe. The Lacerator will be released in 2025. Another DreadXP-published game that I think is more my style is also due to come out. That's Heartworm is about dealing grief by traveling to a spooky place in the middle nowhere as God intended.

You can try The Lacerator yourself on Steam or itch.io.
