I've decided that Casio smart ring-watches are the only thing good in this messed-up universe right now

I'm not completely sold on wearables as they exist today. I can see the appeal in a smartwatch, but I have never felt like spending a lot of money to transfer functions that my smartphone already performs with ease to my wrist. And smart rings? Even less.

Casio seems to have taken this concept to heart. It has announced a digital watch/ring hybrid with some interesting features. However, whether it counts as "smart", is debatable (via The Verge). Let's face it, we are all here to marvel that this is essentially the iconic Casio design, but for finger bones.

Let's check out the features. The CRW-0101JR (even by tech naming standards, it's a catchy name) has a tiny LCD display built into its 1-inch frame. It also has three functional buttons, a lamp, and an alarm which will flash the display rather than make a sound to let you know that your dinner is burning.

Casio claims that the battery will last around two years. However, it can be replaced to keep this watch ticking (ok, digitally cycling).

All very nice. The real meat and potatoes of this ring is that it's a tiny little watch for your fingers. This design choice instantly elevates it from "mild curiosity" to "yes, I'd like one". I'm usually not drawn to glitzy jewelry, but after staring at the photos for a while, I decided that this is all that's right in our messed-up universe. You should also see it.

As a child I wore a Casio, though admittedly, a plastic-framed model that was much less expensive. All of my schoolmates wore Casio watches. It was the default watch with a dubious reputation, for some strange reasons, even though we would have all traded it in for an expensive metal model if we had the money.

I've been checking my bank account to see if there are any spare funds.

On that note, two things: First, it isn't as expensive as you may think, at $128. You'll also notice that the figure is vague because it's based off of the exchange rate for Japanese Yen. This watch is only available in Japan as of December this year. It may take a while before I can purchase one that ships to UK or US. Or maybe not at all. Casio, you wouldn't treat me that way, would you? Would you?

Casio also says that the CRW-010-1JR was manufactured in a single piece. This might make it more attractive and desirable, but it also means that it only comes in a single size (US 10.5). Casio does provide some ugly spacers for better fit.

I don't think it will attach itself to my finger in the right degree of grip as I have Skeletor-like hands. I suppose that with marriage on the horizon my partner might do the honourable and place it on my delicate fingers at the altar.

I don't either. Still, weeny wristwatch>very cool>cannot buy>sad. We can still marvel at it together, can't you?
