Metaphor: ReFantazio’s demo reveals vitally important information about the protagonist: his canonical name

I have a real beef with Atlus for continuing its tradition of not naming the protagonist. It was fine when JRPGs didn't have voice acting. But that's no longer the case! It was a real annoyance to me when Square Enix refused the "official" pronunciation of Tidus in Final Fantasy 10 - though it may have saved us from the horrible "official" pronunciation.

I'm a big fan of canon names. I'm not calling my protagonists Farts Mcgee or John Persona. baby, I want to know's official name. I was baited by Persona 5's manga, which declared Joker to be Akira Kurusu. However, every subsequent piece decided it was Ren Amamiya. Metaphor: ReFantazio is the latest Atlus JRPG that gives us an unnamed character and declares we do it ourselves.

I thought for some reason that we would be given an official name and the main character would also be voiced this time. As you may have guessed, this is not the case. I've been eagerly awaiting any media that would tell me what I should call my main goober over the next 150-hours.

We have it now, thanks to the demo. If the system settings can be trusted, then it's kinda true. If you change the language from the one that you chose in your save file, the default name will be given to the protagonist and you. If you switch from any other system language to English, the protagonist is given the name Will. You get the very appropriate title You.

Does this mean that Will will be the protagonist's name? Maybe not. I've said it before, but names for Atlus characters have changed with new media in the past. With a manga on the horizon, we could end up with something different.

According to this Reddit thread, the names of the characters are different in many different languages. The Dutch name the protagonist Wilhelm, whereas the French names him Eric. In previous footage, we've seen that the Japanese default was Will. However, another screenshot from the PlayStation Store 6 months ago showed it to be Rene.

I kinda like Will. It's almost comically simple, especially in a universe of Hulkenbergs and Strohls. (Though to be fair, his real name is bloody Leon. I don't think "Will", but I will stick to the canon names until the end. The inevitable anime adaptation will turn all this on its head.
