Modder mods laptop to include desktop-grade RTX 490 card. Machine weighs the same as a small dog
Not all cards bearing the GeForce RTX name are the same. The version you'll see in a laptop is different from the desktop model, in almost every way that matters. The laptop model has a different GPU - Nvidia's AD103 instead of the desktop version's AD102 - and 8 GB less available memory. Even after all that compromise, the price is still a concern.
This divergence can be attributed to the fact that the desktop RTX 4090 is a heavy GPU that would be difficult to fit into a laptop case. Naturally, a modder with a creative mind got to work.
According to VideoCardz a Chinese modder named 'Ai Chao Pin De Xiao Bai' (or a beginner who enjoys overclocking) has answered a very specific question: 'What will a laptop look like with a desktop of 4090?'
The resulting build is a blower-style RTX card that's, in a single word, chunky. It's still small enough to fit in a backpack, but at the same weight as a jack terrier on your back it really pushes the limits of portability. It weighs 6.7 kg unplugged and has a 7 cm thick profile. This is a heavy device that you wouldn't want to drop.
There's also the power issue. The unit must always be plugged in to a power supply. The desktop RTX 4090 is heavy and can reach temperatures of 70degC at peak performance.
This machine will not disappoint you in terms of performance. This machine scored a staggering 28,490 in Time Spy thanks to the desktop-grade, overkill RTX4090 , and AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D. This is with a GPU of 36,426. The average GPU score of an RTX is 21,593, meaning that the desktop part, even if it's stuffed in a laptop, is 68% faster.
Still, I can't take my eyes off of this absolute beast. It's impressive work from a self-described "Beginner".
