Modder who bypassed God of War Ragnarok’s PSN requirement takes the mod offline in case Sony knocks.
Sony, the megacorporation, is unlikely to budge from its position on this issue. Modders have been trying to get rid of PSN for a while now. They tried to circumvent sign-in in God of War Ragnarok PC port. However, the workaround is no longer available.
Nexus Mods tweeted on Thursday: "We've noticed the popular PSN bypass mod for God of War Ragnarok was removed from our website by the author. We've reached out in order to find out the reason." Nexus Mods confirmed in a later reply that the modder iArtoriasUA decided to remove the Mod because it gained too much traction and they did not want to get into trouble with Sony.
Nexus Mods reported that iArtoriasUA made the decision to remove the mod from public view because it had received too much attention. (Even IGN and PC Gamer wrote an article on it). "I thought it was better to remove the mod from the public in order to avoid any possible threats from Sony (even though it never modified anything related to Sony products but better safe than regret). I am sorry it happened, but it was unclear. I can't put myself in danger. Hopefully, you understand. Peace!"
It's the internet. Nothing is ever truly gone. Nexus Mods is still displaying replicas of the mod, even though iArtoriasUA removed it. Yesterday, shortly after iArtoriasUA removed the original mod, Bypass PSN login -- No PSSDK was uploaded. In the description, an anonymous modder states: "Re-uploading of the deleted mod." "I AM NOT the original author."
Some players bombed the new God of War Ragnarok PC version on Steam due to frustration with the PSN requirements. It got to a point where it was rated mixed. Now, it seems that things are settling down. The majority of the reviews are positive. One positive review stated that Sony was stupid to make players play a singleplayer title online. "But Santa Monica Studio made one incredible game! "A must play!"
It's likely that Sony will continue to require its PC ports be compatible with PSN, regardless of whether the current PSN bypass is still available or if more will be added to Nexus Mods. The only game the studio has changed its mind about is Helldivers 2 because of the bad reviews it received from some players. Since then, Ghost of Tsushima also requires a PSN Account, so PC gamers should get used to signing in to Sony's service to play future PlayStation PC ports. Or perhaps wait to see whether they get bypass mods, like Ragnarok.
