Phil, buddy. You can't tease StarCraft players by announcing that the RTS will be coming to Game Pass.
For a brief moment, I was excited when I saw Phil Spencer wearing a StarCraft t-shirt at Xbox's Tokyo Game Show. I am a child. StarCraft 2 has been around for more than 14-years, and Blizzard ignores its RTS legacy - let's forget about Warcraft 3 Reforged - for a long time. Could this be about to change? No. No.
The T-shirt tease set up a terrible punchline. StarCraft 2 & StarCraft: Remastered will be coming to PC Game Pass. I suppose that's great news for RTS fans, who may have overlooked two of the genres most important titles. What about the rest of us? It's a real bummer.
These are amazing games that you should have in your library. StarCraft 2 and StarCraft multiplayer are already available for free. However, StarCraft Remastered is an excellent update. The StarCraft 2 campaigns, which are among the best in the genre, are also worth playing if you missed them.
But we need something brand new. Blizzard was one of the driving force behind the RTS Golden Age along with Westwood Studios, before it got into the live-service ring (with an occasional questionable dip in mobile gaming). The competition between these titans shaped an era in gaming and established the RTS genre.
The genre's heyday has passed, but we still await the kind of major success that can propel it forward. The Blizzard we know today is not the Blizzard who gave us StarCraft and Warcraft, but it has the resources and the ability to attract talent so could give us another genre defining RTS. If, you know it tried.
All in all, these games are a great addition to PC Game Pass. You should definitely download them when they arrive on November 5.
