Nvidia has surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable corporation at $3.43 trillion.

Nvidia, the world's most valuable corporation, has once again surpassed Apple as I type these words on an old MacBook Air M1.

The markets are currently closed. Apple's share value puts its total market cap, or its share price multiplied by its number of shares, to $3.38 trillion. Nvidia? It is worth $3.43 trillion.

Even the largest companies' share prices can be volatile. There's no guarantee Nvidia will stay on top, even if I finish this article, publish it, and present it to you. The more Nvidia is able to sit at the top of the table, the more it will be able to claim that it is the world's most valuable business.

This is due to the booming sales of Nvidia AI chips used for training and running large language models such as ChatGPT.

In its most recent quarter, Nvidia sold around 22 billion dollars in AI GPUs to datacenters. AMD sold datacenter CPUs, GPUs and together $3.549 billion in its most recent quarter. Intel's datacenter revenue was $3.3 Billion.

You can see how Nvidia makes money. Here's a factoid to put things in perspective. To use Nvidia AI GPUs you will need a specialised networking kit. Nvidia will sell you this kit, of course. Nvidia actually sold $3.668 Billion worth of this kit. And that's more than AMD and Intel sold in the actual important stuff.

On the other hand, it feels as if Nvidia's wealth is somewhat precarious. Nvidia would see its revenues plummet if spending billions of dollars on LLMs went out of style.

Nvidia's value could also increase if the AI boom continues. If Nvidia's plans for Arm chips in PCs come to fruition, it could be even richer, but you could argue that it is its phones Nvidia needs to get into to beat Apple directly.

We salute Nvidia's financial strength. Nvidia, which started out by making a few chips capable of filtering textures for 3D games, has come a long way.
