Prime Day is a great opportunity to try something new. Here's a piece of fiction that gets games right, and hits hard.

We've already pointed you in the right direction with Prime Day, from the best gaming laptops and gaming chairs to the best gaming tables. It's time to look at the most difficult of goods and hit the books. We love art books but we've been waiting for a fiction novel that gets right. Gabrielle Zevin’s novel Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow is a great example of this. The paperback edition costs less than $12, while the hardcover version is only $9.

The book follows the dual protagonists Sam & Sadie through a narrative arc that spans decades and explores love, art and game development. The Oregon Trail, paper mazes and a meeting in a children's hospital are the two things that bring them together. They then endure betrayal and become a complex creative partnership as adults.

Neither the course of love nor the development of a game has ever been smooth.

The book does not just make a few throwaway references to throwback games. The games that Sadie and Sam (both video and inter-personal) play are used as a theme thread to punctuate and reflect their relationship.

Sam doesn't want Sadie just to solve the maze; he wants her to see him. He doesn't know how to say it, but the betrayal that follows is just as painful.

I won't say much more about the events that test Sadie and Sam’s relationship. But be aware of Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow’s mature exploration on toxicity towards video game developers. Virtual violence spills over into reality with devastating consequences for Sam and Sadie.

In the end, Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow is a book that encourages connection through creativity. It's not that 'everything will be okay in the end', but the overall arc and hopefulness of Sadie's and Sam's relationship is a hopeful one. You will be looking forward to Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow.
