Prime Day offers a similar price for an external SSD that is rated at 2,000 MB/s.
Price check: Newegg $143.99
" data-widget-type="deal" data-render-type="editorial">This October Prime Day has me all sorts of messed-up. When I think I understand the market, it throws me curveballs, like this Adata SE880 external SSD, which is currently available at Amazon for $70.
I've been reviewing portable SSDs, including the SE880-, for some time now. I didn't think a current-gen drive that is as good as this one would be as cheap as an older-gen one. This is also the lowest price this drive has ever been on Amazon.
USB 3.2 Gen2x2 drives are limited to 2,000 MB/s. While most don't reach that level, they come close. If you have an available Gen 2x2 port you will have a better experience with this drive. Previous-gen (3.2 Gen2) drives like the Crucial X9 are limited to about 1,000 MB/s.
- Here's a list of all the October Prime Day PC Gaming deals!
Amazon is currently offering the X9 for $73, and that's with the offer. The X6 costs $68, but it's limited to 800 MB/s. In fact, drives with 1,000 MB/s aren't much cheaper than SE880 at the moment. The SE880 is twice as fast and costs about the same per GB.
All of this is irrelevant if you don’t have a Gen2x2 port. But I bet a lot of you do. After all, almost any motherboard from the current generation should have one, as will many older ones. Even my Intel 12th Gen motherboard (the Gigabyte Z690 UDDDR4) has a port. You may not think they're as common as you think. USB 4 is a different story.
All of this means that there are a lot of people who can benefit from a 2x2 3.2 Gen drive. The SE880 is an excellent choice with this discount.
In my tests (which you can find in my TeamGroup PD20 Review) I found that it offered decent sequential transfer rates of around 1,700 MB/s, for almost a full minute. You should be able to transfer close to 100 GB in less than a minute. Don't you agree that this should cover the majority of use cases?
There are faster drives and also more consistent drives. Are any of them as cheap as the previous-generation drives? Not quite. If I were looking for cheap external storage that had current-gen speeds, I would be looking at this SE880 offer.
