Saber Interactive is helming a new RPG that is based on Avatar: the Last Airbender.

Saber Interactive and Paramount Game Studios (the developers of Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2) announced today the start of work on a new role-playing game set in Avatar: the Last Airbender universe (via IGN).

This project is part a larger goal to expand the Avatar Universe set out by original show creators Michael DiMartino, and Bryan Konietzko. In 2021 they launched Avatar Studios. They are now collaborating with Saber in order to avoid another M. Night Shyamalan catastrophe.

Doug Rosen, SVP of Games and Emerging Media at Paramount, said: "We know that loyal fans of Avatar The Last Airbender are eager for more stories to immerse them in the universe of the series. Through gaming, we can expand the world-building, allowing fans to experience new content in an immersive way." "Saber Interactive is a company that has a track record of bringing IP-based titles to life. We are excited to cofund this AAA title with them and let fans explore this world for themselves."

As of now, we only know that players will take on the role of a "new, never before seen Avatar", who existed thousands of years prior to Avatar: The last Airbender. The game will also require players to "master the four elements, engage with companions in dynamic combat, and experience the decisions and challenges that come along with being the keeper in the world."

It would be great to have a game that captures the essence of Avatar: The last Airbender. This animated show captured children and adults with its carefully crafted dialogues and stories, which were able explain complex issues in a simple way. It was the first show that my family watched religiously. But I also know that I shouldn't get my hopes too high.

Avatar: The last Airbender is not known for its ability to produce new material based on its animated show. M. Night Shyamalan's god-awful film was a bad example, but the Netflix adaptation of the show couldn't capture the magic that made the original so great. The fact that the original creators were not consulted at all stages of both adaptations is one of the biggest problems. This could also be the reason why the upcoming RPG fails.

Maximum Entertainment and Paramount are also creating a competitive fighting game based on Avatar: The Last Airbender. At least, this means that we have a better chance of getting an adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender (or we will be doubly disappointed).
